Interscope Geffen A&M Records is launching an ambitious initiative aimed at strengthening the bond between the label and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), which have played a vital role in the careers of a number of artists and executives.
The first phase will bring Interscope Records to the campuses of Howard University, Tennessee State University and Texas Southern University during Homecoming Week for a variety of activities, including listening parties for the vinyl-only Homecoming SZN Vol. 1, which dropped today (10/11).
Each university will be commemorated with custom artwork for the 10-track album, which includes tracks by Kendrick Lamar, GloRilla, J. Cole and Soulja Boy, among others. Additionally, capsule collections featuring merchandise specific to each school—provided by Champion sportswear—will be available for purchase.
Laura Carter, EVP and head of urban marketing, IGA, said, “Historically Black Colleges and Universities have produced some of the most prominent figures in our country’s history. But HBCU contributions to culture, especially music, have been especially profound. This is one of the many reasons why this compilation project is so important to the artists and executives at Interscope Geffen A&M Records. “
As part of the program, Interscope/UMG will develop HBCU-specific scholarship offerings for prospective interns and mentors and connect HBCU undergrads with HBCU alumni employees for fellowships.
