As the reign of the two Grainges begins, the Sunday Times offers a fascinating look at how father Sir Lucian and son Elliot (pictured) will avoid mixing family with their respective leadership roles at Universal Music Group and Atlantic Music Group.
“It’s awkward,” one source told the paper when asked about the 30-year-old Elliot's ascent to CEO of Atlantic Music Group. “But it would have been more awkward if he worked for his dad.”
Opined another of the younger Grainge, who has enjoyed success independently with his own 10K Projects, “Maybe he was given a head start, but he’s made his own luck ever since.”
The piece recounts fiercely competitive table-tennis games between father and son, as well as the news that Lucian booked British boy band Take That as the entertainment for Elliot's bar mitzvah (Grainge fils is said to have preferred Eminem at the time).
Elliot steps in for outgoing Atlantic CEO Julie Greenwald as part of a sweeping executive shake-up under Warner Music CEO Robert Kyncl that has also seen the departure of Warner's Head of Recorded Music Max Lousada.
