SZA's trophy case will sport a new arrival this summer after she receives the Hal David Starlight Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The honor will be bestowed 6/13 at the SHOF's annual Induction and Awards dinner at New York's Marriott Marquis Hotel.
SZA has won three Grammys for her latest album, SOS, and dominated the pop landscape over the past two years with such hits as "Kill Bill" and "I Hate U." She joins prior Hal David Starlight recipients like Taylor Swift, Post Malone, Sara Bareilles, Ed Sheeran and Alicia Keys, all of whom fit the bill as “gifted young songwriters who are making a significant impact in the music industry with their original songs."
“This is such an exciting time for songwriters and music," SHOF Chairman Nile Rodgers enthused. "Phenomenal artists like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift are pushing the envelope of what success looks like, but who could argue that the last two years belong to SZA? Incredible songwriting, incredible performances, incredible artistry. She so deserves to be the 2024 recipient of the Hal David Starlight Award."
Among this year's SHOF inductees are R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Bill Berry, Steely Dan, Timbaland and Hillary Lindsey. Diane Warren will receive the Johnny Mercer Award.
Meanwhile, we haven't won anything since that goldfish in a Ziploc at the elementary school carnival.
