There's a plethora of legendary duos in hip-hop, among them Method Man & Redman, EPMD's Parish Smith & Erick Sermon, Joseph "Run" Simmons & Darryl "DMC" McDaniels and Timbaland & Magoo. While the latter is perhaps not quite as well known, Timbaland & Magoo put Virginia hip-hop on the map.
Late Sunday night (8/13), social media blew up with tributes after the news broke that Magoo had died at the age of 50. No cause of death has been disclosed.
Timbaland was among the many who addressed Magoo's death on Instagram, writing, "Mannn long live SBI." S.B.I. is a reference to Timbaland and Magoo's first group, Surrounded by Idiots, which also included a then-unknown Pharrell Williams.
Timbo & Magoo would ultimately find more success as a duo. Their debut album, 1997's Welcome to Our World, yielded their highest-charting single, “Up Jumps da Boogie." It was followed by 2001’s Indecent Proposal and 2003’s Under Construction Part II. The pair vastly expanded their impact, however, with their work on behalf of fellow Virginians Missy Elliott and Aaliyah.
In August 2021, Blackground Records signed a distribution deal with Empire Distribution to re-release Timbaland & Magoo's catalog on CD, cassette, vinyl and, for the first time, streaming services. As a result, Welcome to Our World, Indecent Proposal and Under Construction Part II were re-released shortly after the ink dried.
