VOTING MAKES THE BEST FIREWORKS

Given the recent flurry of regressive SCOTUS decisions, particularly a ruling that limits LGBTQ+ rights—not to mention the repressive, bigoted legislation issuing from dozens of statehouses—you'll pardon us if we don't feel particularly like lighting fireworks just now.

We can hardly hoist our holiday beers to the promise of liberty and justice for all if that promise is only extended in practice to some. What we see afoot in our nation is an attempt to shrink the project of democracy, to dole out its blessings only to a select few. Those not deemed first-class citizens, meanwhile, face innumerable perils.

There's only one way to turn that around, and it isn't by wearing stars-and-stripes attire and lighting bottle rockets; it's by voting and mobilizing others to vote.

There are lots of great organizations dedicated to this purpose. A few are linked below. They need your patriotic support. (Even a modest monthly donation can have significant impact—set it and forget it.)

Let's light this candle.
