YES, MTV GAVE OUT ITS AWARDS

On Sunday (5/7) the MTV Movie & TV Awards, pre-taped and devoid of a host, became the first major awards show to air during the screenwriters strike.

MTV fleshed out the production with a boatload of old clips—Rihanna singing "Umbrella" in 2002, Jack Black giving an acceptance speech, etc.—and sneak peeks of Yellowjackets and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

Awards were bestowed, of course, most without an acceptance speech. Tom Cruise had taped his speech for Best Performance in a Movie for Top Gun: Maverick. The character Ghostface accepted Best Movie for Scream VI. Jennifer Coolidge supported the striking writers in her taped speech for the Comedic Genius Award.

In the music categories, Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me was named Best Music Documentary, "Come Back Home" from Purple Hearts was voted best musical moment and Taylor Swift's "Carolina" won Best Song.

Drew Barrymore, who chose not to cross the Writers Guild of America picket line to host the show, was seen in pre-taped skits and product-integration bits.

MTV announced its decision not to air the show live yesterday hours after the WGA said it planned to picket outside Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, where the presentation was to take place in front of a live audience.

Bruce Gillmer, executive producer of the MTV Movie & TV Awards, explained in a statement, "As we carefully navigate how best to deliver the fan-first awards show we envisioned, which our team has worked so hard to create, we’re pivoting away from a live event to one that will still enable us to produce the memorable night full of exclusive sneak peeks and irreverent categories our audience has come to expect and countless moments that will both surprise and delight as we honor the best of film and TV over the past year."
