The 157th anniversary of Black American Independence Day—Juneteenth—will be celebrated Sunday at the Hollywood Bowl. Billy Porter, Earth, Wind & Fire, Jhené Aiko and Mickey Guyton are among the performers.
Live Nation Urban, led by Shawn Gee and Dionne Harmon, and Jesse Collins Entertainment are producing the concert, which will appear on all of CNN’s platforms beginning at 5pm PT/8pm ET.
Also on the bill are Anthony Hamilton, the Debbie Allen Dance Academy, Killer Mike, Lucky Daye, Mary Mary, Michelle Williams, Robert Glasper and The Roots.
For the first time in Bowl history, an all-Black orchestra—the 68-member Re-Collective Orchestra—will perform, under the direction of Thomas Wilkins and Derrick Hodge. Adam Blackstone and Questlove are the evening’s musical directors.
“This is the most important event we’ve ever produced at Live Nation Urban,” Gee said. “It’s a moment to celebrate and reflect on black independence and the black experience. It’s also a moment to raise awareness and shine a light on the miles we still need to travel to true equality. We hope to see you there.”
