Alec John Such, Bon Jovi's founding bassist, whose friendships played a key role in the creation of the band, has died at the age of 70. Bon Jovi announced his death on Sunday but did not provide a date or cause.

“As a founding member of Bon Jovi, Alec was integral to the formation of the band,” the group's statement reads. “To be honest, we found our way to each other through him—he was a childhood friend of Tico [Torres] and brought Richie [Sambora] to see us perform. Alec was always wild and full of life. We will miss him dearly.”

Such first played with Sambora in The Message before becoming manager of the Hunka Bunka Ballroom in Sayreville, N.J., where he booked Jon Bon Jovi & The Wild Ones. Such began playing with the act, bringing Torres and Sambora into the band and playing bass on Bon Jovi’s first five albums, including their breakthrough, Slippery When Wet, and its follow-up, 1988’s New Jersey.

Such, who was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Bon Jovi in 2018, left the group in 1994.
