The legendary rock magazine Creem, launched in Detroit in 1969, enjoyed a tumultuous 20-year tenure as your source of amp-cranking, leather-sporting, bong-stuffing journalism. And it's about to make its return in this era of virtue signaling, vegan-substituting, auto-tuning and artisanal-weed-buying you can do in a store.
That's right: Creem will rematerialize as a subscription-only quarterly print publication starting in September. JJ Kramer, son of co-founder/publisher Barry Kramer, will be running the show.
To whet your appetite (assuming you haven't spoiled it with heart-healthy veggie snacks), the mag has opened up its capacious archives (registration required); go here to check out all 228 issues. We're talking classic columns and commentary from the likes of Lester Bangs, Cameron Crowe, Patti Smith, Greil Marcus, Dave Marsh, Robert Christgau, Jaan Uhelszki and other vital voices.
The mag's revival was undoubtedly spurred by the acclaimed 2020 documentary Creem: America's Only Rock 'N' Roll Magazine (see trailer below), which was showered with praise by critics who spent their grubby youth pawing at its pages. Now you can do the same.
