The Foo Fighters will receive the inaugural U.S. Global Icon Award at the VMAs on 9/12, MTV announced today.
The award, which originated at the cable network’s Europe Music Awards, honors "an artist/band whose unparalleled career and continued impact and influence has maintained a unique level of global success in music and beyond." Those criteria fit Dave Grohl and his supporting cast to a vintage-band tee.
The Foos are nominated this year in the Best Rock, Best Choreography and Best Cinematography categories for their “Shame Shame” clip.
The band got its first four noms 25 years ago for “Big Me” from its self-titled debut LP, essentially a Grohl solo effort, and has taken home a pair of Moonmen: Best Group Video in ’96 for “Big Me” and Best Rock in 2011 for “Walk.”
You’ll likely find them celebrating at Casa Vega—Dave’s favorite watering hole—when they get back from Brooklyn.
