REPORT DIGS DEEP INTO WOMEN IN MUSIC

Over the past few years, there have been a handful of research studies that have pointed out the underrepresentation of women in the music industry. What hasn’t been fully dissected is why.

Until now. Music distributors TuneCore and its parent Believe have partnered with MIDia Research for a landmark look at the challenges and barriers of entry for women.

The report, BE THE CHANGE: Women Making Music 2021, collates the views of 401 female creators—artists, songwriters, producers and DJs— from around the world, for the first time in music industry history.

Andreea Gleeson, Chief Revenue Officer and Co-Head of TuneCore, says, “When I discovered that only 28% of TuneCore artists are female, I was surprised. While that’s better than the industry standard which indexes around 11%, it’s still not good enough. When the barriers to entry are low, why then are women still so grossly underrepresented?”

Read the report here. The results are thorough and enlightening, but the main takeaway is no shocker: Dudes have to do better.
