LINDSEY B. GOES
MERCK’S WAY

Lindsey Buckingham
’s palace of copyrights has been transported to Merck MercuriadisHipgnosis Songs Fund in a newly announced acquisition.

Hipgnosis now holds 100% of Buckingham’s publishing rights, following the pickup of a 25% share on 9/30. The deal encompasses the publishing and writer’s share of his entire 161-song catalog, as well as a 50% share of any unreleased compositions.

Merck lauded Buckingham as “one of the greatest guitarists, songwriters and producers of all time," remarking, "yet he is still so underrated. His work with Fleetwood Mac has brought the world unparalleled joy over the last 45 years, and he belongs in any discussion featuring Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney. It’s wonderful to welcome him and his iconic songs both as a solo artist and with Fleetwood Mac to the Hipgnosis family.”

“Prior to arriving at an agreement with Hipgnosis, I had wonderful long conversations with Merck Mercuriadis,” Buckingham said of the courtship. “I was pleased to find a kindred spirit, someone who’s a big fan of my work in Fleetwood Mac and an even bigger fan of my solo efforts. I look forward to working with Merck and the whole Hipgnosis team going into the future and am confident that my body of work will be curated with great heart and insight.”

Enlisted in 1974 by Mick Fleetwood, with Buckingham's partner Stevie Nicks, to fill the void created by the departure of previous frontman Bob Welch, Buckingham wasted no time in taking the reins of the veteran British group. He was the driving force behind 1975’s captivating Fleetwood Mac, 1977’s massive Rumours and 1979’s audacious opus, Tusk. He subsequently participated in the creation of Mirage (1982), Tango in the Night (1987), The Dance (1997) and the band’s final studio LP, Say You Will (2003). Buckingham’s five solo albums include his landmark 1981 debut LP, Law and Order, and the 1992 cult classic Out of the Cradle.

Buckingham and his bandmates were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, and he was named one of Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2011.

“Go Your Own Way” and “The Chain,” Buckingham’s linchpin songs from Rumours, have each been streamed more than 1 billion times globally, and his four songs from that LP have collectively been streamed more than 1 billion times on Spotify alone.

Buckingham was repped by C3 Management’s Matt Sadie and Simon White, attorney David Altschul of Altschul Olin & Vandergast LLP and business manager Rick Mozenter of Gelfand, Rennert & Feldman.
