BEYONCÉ, RIHANNA
ROCK NAACP AWARDS

Beyoncé dominated the NAACP Image Awards, taking home seven awards at the 51st annual ceremony Saturday. It was Rihanna, who was honored with the 2020 President’s Award for her philanthropic efforts, who left a lasting impression in her call for action.

“If there’s anything I’ve learned, it’s that we can only fix this world together,” Rihanna said. “We can’t do it divided. I can not emphasize that enough. We can’t let the desensitivity seep in. The ‘If it’s your problem, then it’s not mine.’ ‘It’s a woman’s problem.’ ‘It’s a black people problem.’ ‘It’s a poor people problem’.

“When we’re marching and protesting and posting about the Michael Brown Jrs. and the Atatiana Jeffersons of the world, tell your friends to pull up.”

Parkwood/Columbia’s Beyoncé won for Outstanding Female Artist, Outstanding Album (Homecoming: The Live Album), Outstanding Song Traditional (“Spirit”) and Contemporary (“Before I Let Go”), Soundtrack Album (The Lion King: The Gift) and Outstanding Variety Show for her Netflix show Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé.

She also shared in the Outstanding Duo, Group or Collaboration honor for “Brown Skin Girl,” winning with her daughter Blue Ivy, SAINt JHN and WizKiD.

Lizzo was named Entertainer of the Year, Bruno Mars took home Outstanding Male Artist, and Lil Nas X copped Outstanding New Artist. Kirk Franklin received the Outstanding Gospel/Christian Song award for “Love Theory” and Showtime’s Hitsville: The Making of Motown was named Outstanding TV Doc.
