EMMYS LOVE GOT; MUSIC'S A LAUGHING MATTER

While HBO’s Game of Thrones set a new record for most Emmy Awards nominations in a single season, 32, the nominating committee went big on music that made them laugh.

Five of the six nominations in the Original Music and Lyrics category went to comedy songs.

Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban’s effort from the Tony Awards, a new song from The Flight of the Conchords, Leslie Jones’ spoof of Manhattan’s Upper East Side, the Company take-off on Documentary Now! and an Adam Schlesinger/Rachel Bloom/Jack Dolgen song from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend will go up against Mark Sonnenblick, Ashley Paseltimer and Molly Reichard’s number from Song of Parkland, “Beautiful Things Can Grow.”

Last year’s winning music supervision team from The Marvelous Mrs. MaiselRobin Urdang, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino— is again nominated in the supervision category, competing against Thomas Golubic (Better Call Saul), Steven Gizicki (Fosse/Verdon), Brienne Rose (Russian Doll) and Jasper Leak for the Quincy Jones doc, Quincy.

The redoubtable award magnet, Broadway star and multi-genre vocalist Billy Porter, we note, was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role on the cutting-edge FX series Pose.

Netflix’s Springsteen on Broadway received two noms—Outstanding Direction and Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-recorded). With a win for the special, Bruce Springsteen would become the latest EGOT winner.

The 61st Grammy Awards received four noms including Outstanding Variety Special (Live).

HBO received the most noms, 137, besting Netflix’s 117. The premium cabler scored with Chernobyl, Sharp Objects, Barry and Succession; Netflix did well with When They See Us, Russian Doll, Ozark and Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.

NBC had 58 noms and Amazon received 47.
