OSCAR LOVE FOR GAGA, STAR, RHAPSODY

Lady Gaga is up for two Academy Awards, having secured nominations for Best Original Song and Best Actress for her work in A Star Is Born.

“Shallow,” which Gaga wrote with Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt, won the Golden Globe earlier this month and will again be considered a front-runner for the trophy against Kendrick Lamar & SZA’s “All the Stars” from Black Panther.

Golden Globe winners Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star Is Born are among the eight films in the running for Best Picture. Green Book, about a chapter in the life of pianist Don Shirley, is considered a front-runner in a field that includes Vice, Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman and Black Panther, the first superhero film to be nominated in the category.

In the Best Actress category, Gaga is up against Yalitza Aparicio (Roma), Glenn Close (The Wife), Olivia Colman (The Favourite), and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?).

Best Actor nominee Rami Malek, who won the Golden Globe for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, is up against Bradley Cooper, who plays the role of a musician in A Star Is Born, and three other portrayals of real-life people: Willem Dafoe as Vincent Van Gogh;, Christian Bale as Dick Cheney and Viggo Mortensen as Shirley’s driver, Tony Lip.

Best Picture nominees Roma and The Favourite lead the field with 10 nominations each.

Diane Warren secured her 10th nom without a win for “I’ll Fight,” which Jennifer Hudson sings in the documentary RBG. David Rawlings and Gillian Welch, the L.A.-based Americana artists new to Hollywood, secured a nom for “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings” from the Coen brothers’ The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Willie Watson and Tim Blake Nelson sing the tune in the film.

On the more traditional side, the Oscar committee selected Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman’s “The Place Where Lost Things Go” from Mary Poppins Returns, which Emily Blunt sings.

The score nominees include last year’s winner in the category, Alexandre Desplat, for Isle of Dogs, trumpeter Terence Blanchard for BlacKkKlansman, and Original Song nominees Shaiman and Wittman for Mary Poppins Returns. Black Panther’s Ludwig Göransson, Grammy-nominated for his work with Childish Gambino and the film score, is a first-time nominee; If Beale Street Could Talk’s Nicholas Britell was previously nominated for Moonlight.

The 91st Academy Awards will be handed out at the Dolby Theatre on 2/24. Balloting is open from 2/12 to 2/19. Let the lobbying begin.
