THE EMMYS:
MAISEL TOV

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Game of Thrones took home the top honors at the 70th annual Emmy Awards as HBO and Netflix tied with 23 trophies each. The ho-hum show’s TV audience dropped 11% from last year to a record low.

Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel took home five awards Monday, best comedy series, best actress (Rachel Brosnahan), supporting actress (Alex Borstein), writing and directing (Amy Sherman-Palladino). It won three Creative Arts Emmys a week earlier, bringing its tally to eight.

While HBO’s Game of Thrones was named best drama series among its nine wins, the cabler found itself not dominating the awards for the first time in 20 years. Securing honors that often went to HBO in the past were FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, the stars and writers of The Americans and the actors of Godless.

Saturday Night Live was named best variety sketch series for the second year in a row; Last Week Tonight With John Oliver won best variety talk series for the third year running.

Highlight of the night was Academy Awards director Glenn Weiss proposing to his girlfriend.

By moving to Monday from Sunday, NBC saw a dip in ratings to 7.4 in the metered markets with 10.2m viewers. It's the first time in Emmy history that the audience has been below 11m. The last time NBC aired the show, which was also a Monday—August 2014—ratings were nearly a third higher.
