BARTELS EXITING ON A HIGH NOTE

This marks Steve Bartels' final week as the chief exec at Def Jam, and he makes his departure at an auspicious time.

Two acts that have broken on his watch, Alessia Cara and Logic, have been lavished with Grammy love. Cara got nods for Best New Artist and Best Pop/Dup Group Performance; she also participates (as a featured artist/co-writer) in Logic's Song of the Year and Music Video nods for the massive "1-800-273-8255."

Meanwhile, the remix of Latin crossover juggernaut "Despacito" featuring label star Justin Bieber got noms for Song and Record of the Year (and some say is favored to win both).

Bartels has been the label's boss since 2011, when it was severed from Island and erstwhile IDJ chief L.A. Reid moved to Epic. He began his music career as a DJ and got his first label gig in dance promotion at A&M, under the auspices of the late, great Charlie Minor. His career trajectory has seen him transition from top-of-the-line promo man to effective label chief.

What's next for well-regarded industry vet Bartels? Stay tuned.
