LIL PEEP, 1996-2017

Promising singer/rapper Lil Peep, whose real name is Gustav Åhr, died Wednesday of a suspected overdose. He was 21.

Åhr was being developed by Sarah Stennett at First Access, who said, “ I am shocked and heartbroken. I do not believe Peep wanted to die, this is so tragic.

“He had big goals and dreams for the future which he had shared with me, his team, his family and friends. He was highly intelligent, hugely creative, massively charismatic, gentle and charming. He had huge ambition and his career was flourishing.

“I have spoken to his mother and she asked me to convey that she is very, very proud of him and everything he was able to achieve in his short life. She is truly grateful to the fans and the people who have supported and loved him.”

As revealed during a keynote Midem, Stennett found the New York-raised artist living in a warehouse community in L.A.’s Skid Row after listening to his music on SoundCloud. She persuaded him to join the FA fold in exchange for some pink diamond grills and the promise of a tour in Russia, where he played a headline show in Moscow to 2k fans despite having no PR, press or records.

Thirty dates across America followed, and he played the 350-capacity Omeara in London in April. He self-released his debut album, Come Over When You’re Sober (Part One), in August.

Diplo, Marshmello and Post Malone are among those to have paid tribute via Twitter.
