Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” (Big Machine) had an explosive first weekend in the marketplace, earning huge streams and setting the stage for a first week in the range of 550-550k in sales alone, an impressive feat in the streaming era. Could the track surpass this projection?
Tay-Tay’s biggest first week with a single was in 2012, when “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” scored 623k downloads. The lead single from 1989, “Shake It Off,” bowed with 544k two years later.
On the streaming front, the single blew past the Spotify first-day global record of 6.87m listens set by Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” on its first day of release back in January. By the stroke of midnight on Friday, "Look What You Made Me Do" had amassed 10.1m streams on Spotify alone. It's believed that the song has set a first-day streaming record at Apple Music as well.
The VMAs saw the debut of the track's wildly cinematic official video, which took off immediately and has already beaten Adele's record for one-day views with "Hello," which garnered 27.7m in its first 24 hours. More on Tay vs. Adele here.
The lyric video for "Look" also got a big look, earning 19m YouTube views in 24 hours, a new high for lyric videos, breaking the record held by The Chainsmokers f/Coldplay for "Something Just Like This." (As of this writing, it's hit almost 26m.) Rather unsurprisingly, it quickly became the #1 trending clip on the video service. It's also Tay's biggest video bow, blowing by the 17m initial views for "Bad Blood."
