Last night Q-Tip hopped on social media and announced, to the joy of hip hop fans everywhere, that a brand new and final A Tribe Called Quest album is coming on 11/11.
Tip left a lengthy handwritten message that explained the genesis of the recording, and how the group finished it after Phife Dawg's untimely death in March.
Although the title of the album has not yet been revealed, we got a hint this project was coming back in August when Epic Records CEO L.A. Reid appeared on the Rap Radar podcast.
“You know what I’m excited about though? A Tribe Called Quest," Reid said. "It’s an album that they recorded before Phife passed away. I’m really happy about it, man. It’s really something special.”
To promote the release, the group will perform with a “special guest” on the 11/12 episode of Saturday Night Live.
And on 11/19, the famous section of Linden Boulevard and 192nd Street in Queens, where ATCQ filmed the video for their classic joint "Check The Rhyme," will be renamed in honor of the late wordsmith, as "Malik 'Phife Dawg' Taylor Way."
With Q-Tip hitting the air later tonight for his weekly show Abstract Radio on Apple Music's Beats 1, will the superstar come bearing surprises like a first single? Stay tuned.
