Mike Posner’s “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” (Island) is one of the hottest songs out right now. It’s proven to be the perfect follow-up and next chapter in a career that saw an initial eruption in 2010 with “Cooler Than Me” (now 3x platinum). “Ibiza”—currently approaching gold certification—is #6 at iTunes with about 370k sold, #4 on Spotify’s global chart and #5 stateside, while #1 on the Shazam USA Top 100 for a third week. It also just hit #1 on the U.K. singles chart. So who’s behind this earworm’s success?
Sony/ATV tunesmith Posner, who was the song’s sole writer, has crafted hits for other artists for years now. Most recently, the 28-year-old co-penned Maroon 5’s smash, “Sugar,” which was up for a Grammy last month. And he’s previously worked on songs for Justin Bieber, Pharrell, Big Sean, Snoop Dogg, Nick Jonas, Avicii and more.
The original acoustic version of "Ibiza" was produced by Posner and Martin Terefe (Jason Mraz, James Morrison, KT Tunstall), and the SeeB remix, which set the thing on fire, was produced by Espen Berg and Simen Erikstrud.
