Buena Vista's family-friendly Zootopia was the #1 film in America over the weekend, as it became Walt Disney Animation Studios' largest three-day opening ever. Two other debuts appeared in the Top 5: Focus' London Has Fallen (#2) and Paramount's Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (#4), starring Tina Fey.
Meanwhile, Fox's Deadpool became the third R-rated movie to cross the $300m mark and the fourth highest grossing superhero origin feature in history.
1. Zootopia (Buena Vista) $74m 3,827/$19,258 avg. (debut)
2. London Has Fallen (Focus) $22m 3,490/$6,222 avg. (debut)
3. Deadpool (Fox) $16m 3,624/4,525 avg. (week 4)
4. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (Paramount) $8m 2,374/$3,201 avg. (debut)
5. Gods of Egypt (Lionsgate) $5m 3,117/$1,604 avg. (week 2)
In limited release, Broad Green's Knight of Cups—Terrence Malick's latest arty attempt, starring Christian Bale and Natalie Portman—pulled in $57k across just four theaters for a sizable per-theater average (approximately $14k), but garnered some less than pleasant reviews. "Knight of Cups settles into a lukewarm bath of male self-pity, a condition perhaps more deserving of satire than sanctification," wrote The New York Times' A.O. Scott for example.
