U.K. MIDWEEKS: SHAWN MENDES TAKES THE SINGLES LEAD

Island’s Shawn Mendes, also signed to Virgin EMI in the U.K., is sitting at #1 on the midweek Official Singles Chart in Blighty as “Stitches” returns to radio and blows up. The track, originally released in May 2015, is challenging Justin Bieber’s rule, running ahead of “Love Yourself” by 621 combined sales.

Def Jam’s Bieber has dominated the Top 5 singles chart in the U.K. since the release of Purpose in November but that could finally start to slide with “Love Yourself” currently at #2 and “Sorry” at #3.

Adele’s “Hello” (XL/Beggars) rebounds #8 to #4 as her Carpool Karaoke clip on James Corden's Late Late Show reaches viral status (also pushing sales of Kanye West’s “Monster” after the Queen’s highly respectful rendition of the Nicki Minaj verse).

SYCO’s One Direction is also back in the Top 5 with “History” after ending last week with two BRIT nominations for British Group and Best Video for “Drag Me Down.”

On the Official Albums front mid-way stage, the late David Bowie remains the rightful ruler as swan song Blackstar (RCA) shifts over 49k since Friday. Ending its second week at #1 is looking highly likely as its nearest challenger—Adele’s 25—lags 28k combined sales behind.

Panic! at the Disco, released by Max Lousada's Warner in Blighty, could be the third act (behind Bowie and Adele) to hit #1 in the U.S. in 2016 and are on track for a third Top 10 album in Blighty too. Death of a Bachelor (Fueled By Ramen/DCD2) starts at #3 in the midweeks, while Bowie's 2002 Best Of Bowie (Parlophone/RCA) leaps 14 places to land at #4, and Bieber's Purpose slips a spot to round off the Top 5.
