More than 6.5 million people have opted in for Apple Music, and another 8.5m are currently participating in the 90-day free trial, Tim Cook said Monday at a Wall Street Journal technology conference in Laguna Beach. Back in August, you’ll recall the Apple CEO said 11m people were giving the service a road test. That means Apple Music now has about one-third of Spotify’s 20m paying customers.
"I think it's fabulous,” Cook enthused, “and to have over 15 million on there, and 6.5 million in the paid category, I'm really happy about it. And I think the runway here is really good."
While he was at it, Cook pitched away on the human curation beats algorithms angle. "We have music experts, just like the DJ when we were growing up...that are deciding what's next," he said. "And it gives you a feeling that there are no words in my vocabulary to describe... It brings the art back in music."
