YouTube is expected to make news on Day One of SXSW, announcing a new program it calls Musicians Wanted, designed to lure indie musicians to the site, the L.A. Times reports. (Funny—we thought YouTube was already chock-full of indie musicians.) The program offers them an easy way to create their own YouTube homepage or channel and share in the ad revenues generated by their videos. Until now, YouTube has only offered the revenue-sharing option to signed acts. "We're now opening up the program to all independent musicians," said Music Manager Michele Flannery. For the site, which announced a similar program called Filmmakers Wanted at Sundance, the effort is part of a larger push to generate more revenue and become more of an entertainment destination for viewers, “rather than just a repository fo r homemade cat videos,” as reporter Alex Pham puts it.
