Jim Marshall R.I.P.

JIM MARSHALL, 74, one of rock's most iconic photographers, has died. Born in Chicago and raised in San Francisco, Marshall began his career in 1959 with a chance John Coltrane photo session after giving the jazz great a ride in his car. He went on to shoot Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead. Some of his best-known shots include Jimi Hendrix burning his guitar at Monterey and Johnny Cash flipping off the camera at San Quentin. He was the only photog allowed backstage at the Beatles’ farewell concert at Candlestick Park in 1966. "I do see the music. This 'career' has never been just a job--it's been my life,” he wrote in his official bio. (3/24p)
