Sugar Minott Passes

SUGAR MINOTT, 54, a reggae singer and producer, died of undisclosed causes in Kingston, Jamaica over the weekend. The performer, whose real name was Lincoln Barrington Minott, launched his musical career in the late ‘60s as a member of the African Brothers reggae trio. He gained a following in Jamaica's dancehalls with songs like "Vanity" and "Mr. DC" while recording for the famed Studio One. In 1981, he had his biggest hit with a cover of the Jackson Five's "Good Thing Going," which reached #4 in the U.K. singles chart. Minott was known for nurturing young talent with his own Black Roots record label and Youthman Promotion company, including Junior Reid. Minott’s final album, New Day, is scheduled to be released soon. (7/12a)
