add Beefheart

CLEAR SPOT: The news comes just a week after the announcement of an upcoming Captain Beefheart Symposium, organized by former guitarist Gary Lucas, a lifelong fan whose dream came true when Van Vliet installed him as guitarist in the final version of the Magic Band. Lucas appeared on Doc at the Radar Station (1980) and Ice Cream for Crow (1982). More on Lucas and the symposium in the L.A. Times, which has also posted a tribute written by Richard Cromelin, longtime music journalist for the paper. The piece contains the contents of an email received from Tom Waits on Friday: "He was like the scout on a wagon train. He was the one who goes ahead and shows the way. He was a demanding bandleader, a transcendental composer (with emphasis on the dental), up there with Ornette, Sun Ra and Miles. He drew in the air with a burnt stick. He described the indescribable. He's an underground stream and a big yellow blimp. I will miss talking to him on the phone. We would describe what we saw out of our windows. He was a rememberer. He was the only one who thought to bring matches. He's the alpha and the omega. The high water mark. He's gone and he won't be back." (12/18a)
