Bobby Robinson RIP

BOBBY ROBINSON, 93, the founder of one of the first rap labels, Enjoy Records, and the first record man to sign a bonafide hip-hop act from the streets of the Bronx in Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, died Saturday. Robinson’s colorful career was recounted in Dan Charnas’ incredible new book, The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop (see review here), which was just picked up for theatrical representation by William Morris Endeavor for a possible motion picture or TV series. Robinson had run his Harlem record retail shop, Bobby’s Happy House, since World War II. (1/10a)
