TV on the Radio bassist dies

GERARD SMITH, bass player for TV on the Radio, died on Wednesday after a battle with lung cancer. He was just 36. The band announced the sad news in a statement on its site. Smith, who was diagnosed shortly after the band completed its latest Interscope release, Nine Types of Light, had taken a leave of absence while TVOTR went on tour behind the new album. The surviving members have canceled a string of five shows scheduled for this week to mourn their friend and bandmate. (4/21a)
