Smash to Atlantic?

SMASH TV: NBC’s midseason replacement Smash, a TV musical from executive producer Steven Spielberg, starring Katherine McPhee and Debra Messing, is said to be close to a label deal with Atlantic’s Craig Kallman, which would be WMG’s first foray into the lucrative music TV platform thus far dominated by Sony Music (Glee and The X Factor) and UMG (American Idol and The Voice). The new show, set to debut next year, will focus on the making of a Broadway musical inspired by Marilyn Monroe with original songs by Hairspray’s Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. (5/25p)
