Iovine not impressed by Spotify, et al.

JIMMY MOG? Jimmy Iovine isn’t impressed by any of the sub services, or so he says. Yesterday, the multitasking label head/entrepreneur/talent mentor/audio crusader told the San Francisco Chronicle: "Right now, subscription music online is culturally inadequate. It needs feel. It needs culture. What Apple has in the downloading world is very, very good. But subscription has an enormous hole in it, and it's not satisfying right now." Picking up the provocative quote, Digital Music News wondered whether this is a harbinger of huge changes ahead for MOG, the sub service that may well fall under Iovine’s control if its rumored acquisition by Beats Audio and its majority owner HTC comes to pass. For now, Iovine is mum on the deal. "I can't show the magic trick," he teased. "But right now the services are utilities. We only see things in a complete thought." Hey, that’s what he said. In any case, there’s a growing belief around the biz that it’s only a matter of time before Iovine makes his, challenging Spotify and the other existing services with what we’ll call the Jimmy version, the next chapter after Beats. This oughta be interesting… (4/10a)
