Prince Exits UMPG

PRINCE EXITS UMPG: Prince has severed ties with Universal Music Publishing Group, according to a report in Music Week. The legendary Minneapolis musician had been signed with UMPG for years, last re-upping his deal in 2005. "We are pleased to announce that Prince and Universal have reached a mutual agreement in terminating their long-standing publishing deal," said his manager Kiran Sharma. "It is an exciting opportunity for Prince to consider fresh and new ideas for all his music." Prince will perform upcoming dates in L.A., N.Y., Canada and Australia, though he announced he would be “holding off on recording until piracy is kept in check." His UMPG deal covered the world, including his back catalog and all future recordings. The split was reportedly amicable on both sides. (7/10a)
