Bill Doss, RIP

BILL DOSS, co-founder and frontman of The Olivia Tremor Control, has died, according to a post on the band's official site. He would have turned 44 on Sept. 12. "We are devastated by the loss of our brother Bill Doss," says the band's statement. "We are at a loss for words." No cause of death has been released. Doss co-founded the Athens-based indie-rock band in the early ’90s with childhood friends W. Cullen Hart and Jeff Mangum, the latter of whom subsequently formed Neutral Milk Hotel. The two bands became key members of Athens’ Elephant 6 collective. The Olivia Tremor Control released the influential albums Music From the Unrealized Film Script: Dusk at Cubist Castle (1996) and Black Foliage: Animation Music Volume One (1999) before splitting up in 2000. Doss went on to release a pair of albums with his band The Sunshine Fix, and later joined fellow Elephant 6 band Apples in Stereo. The Olivia Tremor Control reunited for a handful of shows in 2005, and continued to play the occasional gig, most recently on July 26 in Athens. (8/1a)
