WHILE MY SITAR GENTLY WEEPS: Ravi Shankar, who passed away yesterday (see item below), will be one of several iconic artists to receive a 2013 Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award, NARAS has announced. Motown greats The Temptations, singer-songwriter extraordinaire Carole King, singer Patti Page, classical-piano virtuoso Glenn Gould, celebrated jazz bassist Charlie Haden and influential bluesman Lightnin' Hopkins will also be honored at the Grammys in Feb. Hailing Shankar as "a true pioneer," Academy head Neil Portnow noted in a statement that he'd been able to notify the sitar wizard (and multiple Grammy winner) last week of the pending award. "He was deeply touched and so pleased, that he extended a gracious and personal invitation to visit with him at his home, declared Portnow. "We have lost an innovative and exceptional talent and a true ambassador of international music. Our thoughts and sincerest condolences go out to his family, friends and all of those around the world who were inspired by his music and compassionate philanthropy." (12/12p)
