Box office

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: On the face of it, The Internship seemed like a can’t-miss proposition: The buddy comedy reteams Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson for the first time since the smash The Wedding Crashers, it’s intriguingly set on the Google campus and it plays off of our current fascination with the Internet. So what happens? It gets punked by yet another low-budget horror flick. So much for high concept. Here’s the Top five, according to estimates gathered by Hollywood.com.

1. The Purge (Universal) – $36.4m, 2,536 theaters, $14,345 avg.
2. Fast & Furious 6 (Universal) – $19.8m, 3,771 theaters, $5,240 avg.
3. Now You See Me (Lions Gate) – $19.5m, 3,020 theaters, $6,457 avg.
4. The Internship (Fox) – $18.1m, 3,366 theaters, $5,377 avg.
5. Epic (Fox) – $12.1m, 3,594 theaters, $3,367 avg.

Holding on strong at #6 was Paramount’s Star Trek: Into Darkness, which took in another $11.7m in its fourth week, bringing the film to $200m. (6/10a)
