SHE’S GOT SOME FRIENDS: More than 2,000 industry movers and shakers packed the Convention Center to honor MusiCares 2014 Person of the Year Carole King. Past honorees Bonnie Raitt, Gloria Estefan and David Crosby were there, along with Yoko Ono, Ciara, Diane Warren, Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson and Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, notes USA Today’s Patrick Ryan, burning the midnight oil and making his deadline. "That cat from the Tapestry album must be dead, right?" host Jimmy Kimmel speculated at one point. The evening included performances by King’s longtime friend and partner James Taylor, LeAnn Rimes and Steven Tyler, Miguel and Kacey Musgraves, Jakob Dylan and daughter Louise Goffin, along with P!nk, Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Train, Jason Mraz, Zac Brown, Sara Bareilles and 20 Feet from Stardom subjects Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, Judith Hill and Darlene Love, while Amy Grant, Jennifer Nettles, Martina McBride and Miranda Lambert formed a one-off girl group. "I really believed so much, Carole, that you were my friend,” Gaga enthused. “Thank you for inspiring us female songwriters every day." Said the honoree, "As a songwriter, my dream was always and still is to hear great singers perform my songs. It does not get any better than this, folks." The event raised more than $5.5 million.
