THE GLOBES PUT THE ARTIST ON THE OSCAR RADAR

Silent Film Nabs Six Nominations for Jan. 15 Televised Gala on NBC
The Artist is after The Oscar.

Maybe Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais won’t talk in honor of the French-based silent homage, which topped the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s announcement of its nominees in film and TV, with six overall, including Best Picture (Comedy or Musical), Jean Dujardin for Best Actor (Comedy or Musical), Berenice Bejo for Best Supporting Actress, with Michel Hazanavicius (Bejo’s husband) up for Best Director and Screenplay.

The Descendants was next up with five nominations, including Best Motion Picture—Drama, George Clooney for Best Actor (Drama), Shailene Woodley for Best Supporting Actress and Alexander Payne for Best Director and Best Screenplay (with Nat Faxon and Jim Rash). Clooney also received a nomination for Best Director and Best Screenplay (with Grant Heslov and Beau Willimon) for The Ides of March, while Ryan Gosling got noms for Best Actor (Drama) in the same movie as well as Best Actor (Comedy) for Crazy, Stupid Love.

The Help is also up for five, including Best Motion Picture-Drama, with acting nods for Viola Davis, Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer, as well as Best Song (Mary J. Blige’s “The Living Proof”).

David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo grabbed only two nominations, one for Best Actress-Drama Rooney Mara, and one for the score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

Aside from Mary J., Elton John, Chris Cornell and Madonna are among the nominees for Best Song.

The awards will be handed out live on Jan. 15 on NBC. Here’s a complete list:
