CHILDISH GAMBINO, THE HEAD AND THE HEART ENTER VIBE FRAY

Donald Glover's Rap Persona, Seattle Indie Folk-Rockers Begin Their Ascent

Actor-turned-rapper Childish Gambino and indie folk-pop outfit The Head and the Heart are the two newest entries to the Vibe-Rater Sweet 16 of new and developing acts picked to achieve success.

The latest signing to Daniel Glass' Glassnote indie, Childish Gambino is the nom de hip-hop for actor/comic Donald Glover of TV's Community fame, whose blend of rap and lyrical smarts has moved him from a cult figure to a crossover following. "Bonfire," the first track from his album Camp, which comes out Nov. 12, arrives on the heels of a pair of popular mixtapes, "I Am Just a Rapper 1" and "2," and is already receiving strong mixshow support from Hot 97, Power 105, WJMN, KUBE, WWKX, WZMX and WAJZ, among others. Look for upcoming TV appearances on Fallon (11/5) and Conan (11/15).

Following a sold-out IAMDONALD tour, Gambino, who got his moniker from a Wu Tang Clan name generator, will hit 11 cities along the East Coast for the Sign Up Tour, which kicked off in Memphis earlier this month and wraps on Nov. 12 at Club Nokia in L.A. Press highlights include Spin, The Source, XXL, Rolling Stone and Paste. The iTunes pre-sale begins 11/1, with a Last.fm discover session the week of 11/15, as well as AOL Spinner and iTunes indie spotlight features. For the full entry, go here.

Sub Pop folk-pop mavens The Head and the Heart see their self-released, eponymous album get a reissue from the Seattle indie label. Formed in the summer of 2009 by Josiah Johnson (vocals, guitar, percussion) and Jonathan Russell (vocals, guitar, percussion), the band also includes Charity Rose Thielen (violin, vocals), Chris Zasche (bass), Kenny Hensley (piano), and Tyler Williams (drums).

The track, "Lost in My Mind," spent three weeks at #1 on Triple A and is now crossing over to PoMo at KNDD, KNRK, KFOG, WZGC, WXRV, KMTT, KTCZ and more. “Down In The Valley” is next up at Triple A. The band does Letterman tomorrow night (10/28), while a tour with My Morning Jacket is up next (11/2-11/19), before they return to the States for radio holiday shows before the end of the year.
