With Broken Bow’s Jason Aldean (#11) just outside the Top 10, Cage the Elephant and Mumford & Sons give Bob Morelli’s surging Team RED three of the first 11 entries.

TAKING THE CAKE

Cake, Cage the Elephant Debut on Top in Worst Sales Week in History
It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

For veteran Sacramento, CA, alt rockers Cake, it’s a career milestone as the band debuts at #1 with their Upbeat/ILG release, Showroom of Compassion, the band’s first new studio album in six years, which sells 42k.

Unfortunately, that’s the lowest-ever sales total for a chart-topper in history, falling below last week’s Taylor Swift total of 52k for Speak Now.

Jive/RED Bowling Green, Kentucky band Cage the Elephant debuts at #2 with their sophomore album, Thank You Happy Birthday, by far the group’s best chart showing, fueled by the Top 3 Alternative/Rock hit, “Shake Me Down.”

Last week’s best-seller, Swift’s Big Machine album, Speak Now, dips to #3, with Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Motown’s Nicki Minaj (#4) and New Elektra’s Bruno Mars (#5) rounding out the leaders.

Big Machine country duo Steel Magnolia is the week’s other top bow, coming in at #6, followed by Def Jam/IDJ’s Rihanna (#7), Sony Music Nashville’s Country Strong soundtrack (#8), Roc-a-Fella./IDJ’s Kanye West (#9) and Glassnote’s Mumford & Sons (#10).

With Broken Bow’s Jason Aldean (#11) just outside the Top 10, Cage the Elephant and Mumford & Sons give Bob Morelli’s surging Team RED three of the first 11 entries.

Reach Christian act LeCrae (#15) is the only other new chart entry, while Columbia’s Train surges back into the Top 50 at #43.

Columbia’s Glee: The Music Vol. 4 (#22-17) is the only double-digit gainer, while New Elektra’s Cee-Lo, thanks to his appearance with host Gwyneth Paltrow on Saturday Night Live, pushes his Lady Killer album into positive territory, with a 1% gain. Forget you, indeed.

Hitting retail this week are Capitol/EMI’s The Decemberists, Razor & Tie’s latest Kidz Bop Kids collection, Epic’s Dublin pop idols The Script, Custard/Atlantic’s James Blunt and Epitaph’s Social Distortion with its first studio album since 2004’s.Sex, Love and Rock ‘n’ Roll.
