Two films about the early days of moviemaking, Martin Scorsese’s Hugo and the silent sensation The Artist, top the list of nominees with 11 apiece, including Best Picture, in the Broadcast Film Critics Association’s 17th Annual Critics Choice Movie Awards. The awards will be handed out on Jan. 12, airing live from the Hollywood Palladium on VH1.
George Clooney (The Descendants), Leonardo DiCaprio (J. Edgar), Ryan Gosling (Drive) and Brad Pitt (Moneyball) join relative newcomers, The Artist’s Jean Dujardin and Shame’s Michael Fassbender in the Best Actor category, while Best Actress includes Viola Davis (The Help), Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene), Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady), Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin), Charlize Theron (Young Adult) and Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn).
Veterans Steven Spielberg (War Horse) and Martin Scorsese (Hugo) are joined in the Best Director category by The Artist’s Michel Hazanavicius, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close’s Stephen Daldry, The Descendants’ Alexander Payne and Drive’s Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn.
