The AC/DC retail rollout being orchestrated by Columbia, Wal-Mart, MTV and AntHill Trading (the merchandise arm of Live Nation) has a great many moving parts.
With the well-publicized Black Ice album hitting Wal-Mart stores exclusively this Monday (10/20), additional retail venues will be “popping up” in some unexpected places.
Wal-Mart, apparently acknowledging a lack of store presence in New York and L.A., will be creating two “pop-up” stores in those cities.
Starting the day of release, Wal-Mart will take over the MTV Store on Broadway in Manhattan and another location in L.A.’s Hollywood and Highland mall.
The retail outlets will sell the new AC/DC release exclusively until 11/2, when they will also begin selling the “AC/DC Live” edition of MTV’s Rock Band 2. The game mimics the track listing of the AC/DC live album.
In addition, two “ice cream trucks” will begin roaming N.Y. and L.A. starting tomorrow (10/16), to help promote the Monday release. It will not only let people hear the new record, but also feature the new Rock Band game in the back of the truck with a pull down display.
On Monday, the trucks will also carry the CD for sale through the following Wednesday. The pop-up stores will stay open through the holidays.
