ONE TO WATCH
The Breakups (www.myspace.com/thebreakupssuck), who hail from good ol’ Hollywood, have name-checked such indie-pop staples as The Shins, Elliott Smith and Wilco as influences. Their adventurous arrangements and pop-rock sensibility combine to form a unique power-pop sound that has us nodding our heads in excitement. Their EP Eat Your Heart Out is available for your listening pleasure, on iTunes; allow us to recommend “Let’s See What Happens” and “Tissue Sample” for starters. Troll their MySpace page to stay in the loop on gigs in your area. If you’re lucky, you may get to buy us a drink at their next gig.
ON DECK
The Rust (www.myspace.com/therustrocks): These Nashville rockers are starting to generate some buzz with their single “Missing You,” which is already spinning on two stations in their hometown. The band is also poised to announce their fall tour with Secondhand Serenade, Thriving Ivory and Parachute. We expect big things from this outfit in the coming months, so keep your eyes and ears peeled to this site, as we continue to follow their story.
BAND/ARTIST UPDATES
Static Summer (www.myspace.com/staticsummermusic) will be showcasing for a whopping seven labels next Wednesday (6/17) at S.I.R. on 25th St. at 8 p.m. sharp. They can also be heard on Matt Pinfield’s show on WRXP 101.9 between 9:30-10 a.m. the same day. As if that wasn’t enough, the band just got invited to play live on an episode of American Chopper.
Saint Motel (www.myspace.com/saintmotel) are headlining the Viper Room June 12 on a show sponsored by KROQ’s Locals Only, which has been spinning their song “Dear Dictator” on a regular basis. They’ll also be starting a residency at Spaceland in September. The band recently sent out a six-video sampler, and we must say, it’s pretty impressive. Donny Anderson (www.myspace.com/donnyanderson) is writing in Los Angeles with Maia Sharp and Robin Lerner, as well as in Nashville with hit writers James House and Greg Barnhill, among other hit songsmiths. Donny is putting together a soulful-sounding record, slated to be released sometime in the next year, with film and TV placements already rolling in.
