MOORE’S FAHRENHEIT 9/11 #1 AT BOX OFFICE

First Documentary to Score #1 Opening
Michael Moore’s much-talked-about examination of the days after 9/11 leading up to the Iraq war, Fahrenheit 9/11, scorched box office figures over the weekend as the film raked in an estimated $21.8 million for the three-day period, making it the first documentary to open at #1.

Moore’s last movie, Bowling for Columbine, did $21.5 million over the course of its entire theatrical run.

Fahrenheit 9/11 reportedly did well throughout the country, despite being shown on only 865 screens. Exit survey showed that 91% of the movie’s viewers thought it was “excellent,” and 93% said they would “definitely recommend” it, according to a Reuters report.

Coming in at #2 in the weekend box office race was White Chicks, with a weekend gross of $27.1 million. At #3 is last week’s #1, Dodgeball, with $18.5 million, followed by The Terminal with $13.9 million. #5 is The Notebook, which took in $13 million.
