The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King Brings Home 11 Awards
It was a big win for Hobbits at the Academy Awards.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King swept the Oscars, taking home a record-tying 11 gold statues of the bald, gender neutral figure. The film won Best Picture, Peter Jackson won Best Director, and it took home Best Adapted Screenplay.

In the acting categories, Sean Penn won Best Actor for Mystic River, Charlize Theron won Best Actress for Monster, supporting actor and actress trophies went to Tim Robbins for Mystic River and Renee Zellweger for Cold Mountain.

Sofia Coppola won for her original screenplay for Lost in Translation.

Return of the King also won for musical score, visual effects, editing, makeup, art direction, costume design and sound mixing. "Into the West," from King, won the best-song. It was written by Fran Walsh, the film's co-screenwriter, score composer Howard Shore and Annie Lennox, who sings it.
