HAVE ANOTHER GRAMMY CRACKER

U2 Leads the Way with Eight, While India.Arie and Alicia Keys Grab Seven and Six
U2, Alicia Keys, Alison Krauss, Train and Nelly Furtado should start getting their wardrobes together.

They are among the artists who received expected multiple nominations for this year's 2002 Grammy Awards, announced this morning in Beverly Hills.

What wasn't expected was the strong showing of Motown's neo-soul newcomer India.Arie, who scored seven noms. More surprising still was the absence of Keys' critically acclaimed J Records bow, Songs in A Minor, in the Album of the Year category, though her "Fallin'" did show up as a finalist for Record and Song of the Year, as she nabbed six nominations overall.

U2 scored the most noms with eight, including Album, Song and Record of the Year. In the Best Rock Song category, the band competes against itself, with "Elevation" and "Walk On" each nominated.

Other multiple nominees included classical conductor Pierre Boulez with six, and country singer Alison Krauss, R&B vocalist Brian McKnight and rap-rockers OutKast with five each. T-Bone Burnett, Nelly Furtado, Train, Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and Lucinda Williams each had four nominations.

And while critical fave Ryan Adams didn't nab a nom for Best New Artist, he did cop three other nods, including Best Male Rock Vocal Performance ("New York, New York"), Best Male Country Vocal Performance ("Lovesick Blues" from Lost Highway's Hank Williams tribute disc, Timeless) and Best Rock Album (Gold).

Sadly, our own Bud Scoppa, a nominee last year, was robbed in the Album Notes category, failing to receive a nod for his superlative Simon & Garfunkel liners on the recent Legacy Columbia box set reissue.

Oh, yeah. Polka legend Jimmy Sturr is up for his 12th statue for his latest effort, Gone Polka, going up against the immortal Eddie Blazonczyk, Brave Combo, Lenny Gomulka and Walter Ostanek in one of Grammy's most traditionally heated categories. May the best accordionist win.

The Grammys will be handed out Feb. 27 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
