Yet another online venture is poised to make personnel cuts. Tonos Entertainment, founded by Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds, David Foster and Carole Bayer Sager, announced that it will make significant layoffs soon, maybe as high as 50%. The announcement comes two weeks after company CEO Matt Farber resigned. The L.A.-based company, founded in 1999 by the three music industry vets, operates industry gossip site VelvetRope.com as well as talent mentoring site Tonos.com. Tonos currently has 56 employees, but most of the staff was unavailable for comment, as they were either out at job interviews or very busy surfing Headhunter.net.
HAYRIDES FOR MOREIN A QUARTER
EMusic announced that it is offering rare and exclusive Rockabilly recordings from the radio program "Louisiana Hayride." The show, which aired weekly from 1948 to 1957 and infrequently into the early-1980s, featured pioneers of rock & roll and country. EMusic is selling recordings from the program, including performances by Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, June Carter, Tibby Edwards and more. The site will also feature information about the program and rare photos of dot-com music sites with a stock price of more than a buck.
IRADIO, YOU JANE
Motorola is taking in-car entertainment a step further. Great, like people arent distracted enough. The wireless communications company has introduced its iRadio Telematics System, in hopes of transforming the dashboard into an all-converging entertainment center equipped with picture, information and communication capabilitiesdelivered wirelessly to your car. Motorola iRadio engineer Jeff Lee said "We really tried to focus iRadio toward the things that you want to do in your car, and to the experience you would want to have in your car." Nokia today announced a new accessory for its mobile phones, the digital Nokia Music Player HDR-1. With the Nokia Music Player, users can listen to an integrated FM stereo radio and download audio files, in AAC and MP3 formats, while calling the office to tell them that the golf game is running late. The device is compatible with Nokia 3310, 3330, 8210 and 8850 model phones, and will be available during the third quarter, 2001. Now get off the phone and drive already.
IF ITS TOO LOUDEYE, YOURE TOO OLD EYE
Loudeye Technologies, Inc. , which provides services and infrastructure for digital content delivery has acquired online radio application technology and other assets of OnAir Streaming Network, Inc. The acquisition expands Loudeyes streaming applications into online radio, allowing online music distributors to work with a single provider for digital content and hosted applications. The "other assets" include a pinball table and a really kick-ass EverQuest account.
MP3.COM HAS NEW LOOK, SAME GREAT TASTE
MP3.com announced today that they are enhancing the look and function of its interactive radio stations, due to increasing popularity, or a really bored design team. In number, the user-created radio stations currently surpass the number of artists available on the website. The made-over sites will include hyperlinks to users sites, e-mail links and just a touch of rouge.
