WHAT COUNTS IS WHAT’S ON THE INSIDESESSIONS

UMG and Penguin Putnam Team for Interactive Music and Publishing Courses

Universal Music Group and publisher Penguin Putnam, Inc. have created InsideSessions, a multi-media distance learning and mentoring program that targets people aspiring to break into music and publishing. The company, which will be headed by former Time Warner Audio Books CEO Lori Weintraub, offers interactive learning programs via the Internet, CD-ROM, DVD and home video.

"InsideSessions is about breaking down barriers and opening doors for the next generation of aspiring artists, authors and industry executives," said UMG Chairman/CEO and InsideSessions co-founder Doug Morris. "I wish something like InsideSessions was available to me when I was first getting started in this business. That and Starbucks’ caramel Frappuccinos. Mmmmm, good."

The learning programs feature exclusive interviews from best-selling authors, multi-Platinum artists and label executives. The programs cost $69.95, and include the Internet-based program and a supplemental free CD-ROM (to provide low-bandwidth users a broadband online experience).

InsideSessions’ first music course, "From Demo to Deal," is available via the website, and features advice from artists such as Elton John, Fred Durst, Shaggy, Nelly, 3 Doors Down, Enrique Iglesias. In addition, the program also includes interviews from execs like Morris, Tommy Mottola, Russell Simmons, Lyor Cohen, and more, though not Alain Levy. Not yet anyway.

Future projects include expanding its reach through UCLA Extension programs and product sales like books and CDs, and developing programming for television. Farmclub 101, anyone?

In related news, hitsdailydouble.com’s guy in goggles will soon be offering his own version of net classes, "InsideMyPants," for $9.95 per minute.
