Everyone's favorite charitable organization, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, will be doling out $313,500 to 16 organizations and individuals as part of its 2001 Recording Academy Grants. The grants fund projects in three categories: archiving and preservation of the recorded sound/music heritage of the Americas, research and implementation projects related to music and studies on the medical and occupational well-being of music professionals. No, they don't make the monthly payments on Mike Greene's BMW.
Recipients are chosen by the Academy's National Professional Education Committee based on merit, uniqueness of the project, the ability to accomplish intended goals and whether they're a blood relations of Greene. Dollar amounts range from $10-20k. Since its 1987 inauguration, NARAS has doled out more than $1 mil to more than 100 recipients.
This year's winners include the American Composers Orchestra, Association for Cultural Equity, WGBH Educational Foundation, The Library of Congress, the Love of Christi Foundation and the Music Intelligence Neural Development, as well as eight others, including the "Send Chuck Philips To Journalism School Fund."
