Priority scores another slam-dunk with the 504 Boyz at #3, representing 118,000 units, in the week's lone major debut, while, among second-weekers, LaFace/Arista's Toni Braxton keeps "The Heat" up at #5 and Columbia/CRG's Cypress Hill continue smokin' at #8.
Says Kevin Engler of Best Buy, ever eager to see his name in boldface type, even on this sorry site. "This week 504 Boyz debuts #1 with us, as the superstar stable at No Limit continues to show its strength." Not exactly profound, but it saves us the trouble of having to write it.
But the week's most intriguing story is the album-selling power of the single. A year ago, the conventional wisdom was that albums in the Rap and Urban genres would debut huge and then promptly disappear from sight. Well, that was then and this is now, as four of the Top 10 LPs are hanging around precisely because of the big boosts they've received from extensive radio and video play. Clearly, Sisqo's "Thong Song" is the reason the Dragon/Def SoulIDJ singer's back at #2, while the same factor is kicking in for #4 Joe (Jive), #9 Destiny's Child (Columbia/CRG) and resurging Jay-Z (Roc-A-Fella/IDJ) at #10
"There's no question that the sustained sales action on acts like Sisqo, Joe and Jay-Z are obvious examples that there is still no substitute for a huge single at radio and the video channels," Engler chimes in helpfully. "These records show no signs of letting up."
Hey, is there an echo in here?
In other Top 10 action, Santana (Arista) refuses to go away at #6, and… OK, there's one more record in there, but the Knicks and Heat are about to tip off, and at hitsdailydouble.com, priorities are priorities: first hoops, then work.
